My New Girls. Each season, Anita and Katie see hundreds of girls during the casting process. Every now and again a girl (or two) will pass through our doors and instantaneously become a poignant inspiration. It is a sensate connection. They are the girls with old souls, a kind of naïve curiosity and a genuine desire to be a part of the often-painstaking process we call, “looks.” These girls become something like a muse for me - and - a kind of catalyst to continued inspiration. It’s as if the characters I imagined walked straight off the pages of the narrative in my head and into the studio. There were two girls during the Spring/Summer 16 season that embodied the essence of this characterization. VERONIKA Her patience, electric energy, enthusiasm and sense of humor became such a positive reinforcement during those final days of endless hours. After days of putting on, taking off, trying this and holding that as I tucked, draped and trimmed, I never once heard a murmur of anything but gratefulness: attitude with gratitude! The ease with which she bent her elbows, shaped her hands, twisted her arms, contorted her legs and adjusted her hips in ways to help me visualize the possibility of a might-be-look was extraordinary. Veronika’s New York born and raised sensibility was a direct link to my heart. A girl born in the 90’s who could sing Streisand with me word for word, rap along to the Beastie Boys, reference art and carry a deep conversation about RuPaul’s Drag Race… Thank you, David Sims for this magical portrait of my “sistah from another mistah.” @veronikavilim.
