Yesterday I met this man: Pastor Thomas Rai. He has been persecuted by the police for believing in a different religion. He told us stories about how he escaped, avoided jail and what happened after that. He opened an orphanage in Kathmandu for young girls. Here they are with him. Those girls are all going to school and grow up in a safe environment. They could have been victims of sex trafficking or child labor. When I asked him if he forgave the people who hurt him, beaten him up, and tortured him he smiled and answered with all his heart : "Of course I forgave!! I had the chance to come to Kathmandu after that! I had a chance to study, have a better life and help people!" Wow! This reminds me of the words of #gregorydavidroberts in the first chapter of #shantaram : "It took me a long time and most of the world to learn what I know about love and fate and the choices we make, but the heart of it came to me in an instant, while I was chained to a wall and being tortured. I realised, somehow, through the screaming of my mind, that even in that shackled, bloody helplessness, I was still free: free to hate the men who were torturing me, or to forgive them. It doesn’t sound like much, I know. But in the flinch and bite of the chain, when it’s all you’ve got, that freedom is an universe of possibility. And the choice you make between hating and forgiving, can become the story of your life." So inspiring. Thank you @mistersmims for introducing us.
