Because of salamander chytrid—a deadly fungus—salamanders are now listed as injurious wildlife by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. The listing will greatly restrict new salamanders from coming into the country, and reduce the chances of importing an infected animal. But scientists are also trying to determine if salamander chytrid is already here. One of our students at the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation is testing swabs from pet salamanders. After testing about 200 swabs from around the country, he hasn’t found any infected with salamander chytrid. But much more testing is needed to be certain salamander chytrid is not in the U.S. ‪#‎WeSaveSpecies
