There are some people who's music, voice and vision are so large that it seems as though they were always legends. Like it is hard to imagine that I was alive when timeless tracks like "We Could Be Heroes" or "Let's Dance" or "Fame" first came on the radio. Songs so powerful they seemed like they were always there and yet I was alive to remember their birth into my life. I recall vividly seeing Bowie on the Serious Moonlight tour in 1983 in front of a stadium full of alt-rockers, mods and hippies and performing Fame in front of a 99% black audience a few years before on SoulTrain with Don Cornelious introducing him as David "Booie". Me and my 17 year old son Ade' were listening to his last album Blackstar in two different continents simultaneously, he in San Francisco and me in Bali and texting each other about it when we got the news of his passing. It was one of those weird synchronicities that transcended generations, continents, genres, cultures, technology and spirit just like the man himself had done throughout the journey of his brilliant life. I loved the way he challenged my musical mind, through his sound, fashion and gender bending. I was also moved by this pale skinned man with one dark eye and one blue, finding love with Somalian super model Iman who at the time I considered the most beautiful woman on the planet. I dunno, I just loved seeing photos of them together and imagining what their home life was like: this man who broke, no shattered, so many stereotypes curled up on the couch in a tee shirt and boxers eating a bowl of ice cream with his stunning wife who must have been is intellectual equal. Oh the conversations they must have had. He somehow made me realize it was okay to be different, after all, in my mind no one could have been more unique than him, but somehow his reassuring deep voice always seemed to say "walk with confidence, it's okay, be you, whoever you are". That's some cool shit. So thank you David Bowie for the way you made me feel. #Bowie #Soulrocker #forever Oh and by the way, your new album is as challenging and familiar as ever, well done!!!
