François Mitterrand, le Président de la République française du 21 mai 1981 au 17 mai 1995, a posé dix séances pour le sculpteur Daniel Druet. Lors de la 8ème séance du sculpteur, insatisfait de son travail, il détruit le buste. La sculpture finale a été réalisé au cours de deux dernières séances un an et demi plus tard.

The President of the French Republic posed for ten sittings for sculptor Daniel Druet. During the 8th sitting the sculptor, unsatisfied with his work, destroyed the bust. The final sculpture was realized during these last two sittings a year and a half later.
