Andrew Sesay, #Ebola survivor and leader of Survivor's Network in Kambia, #SierraLeone. Mr. Sesay’s sister traveled to her village from Freetown. She was complaining of fever and her family thought it was a common disease. They gave her medication. Mr. Sesay’s mother became infected with Ebola. She was taken to government hospital. They said it was diabetes and high-blood pressure and after three days, his mother passed away. When Mr. Sesay became sick and was taken to the ETU, the doctor said he had Ebola according to his appearance. In the morning, he saw both his younger sister and aunt at the ETU. All three tested positive for Ebola. They were taken to Hastings Treatment Center in Freetown. Both his sister and aunt passed away. Afterwards his brother, sister and younger brother became ill with Ebola. Previously he wanted to study banking and finance. Now, he’s leaning towards public health or human resources because of Ebola. All together, there are 10 orphans in his family. Since Ebola, he has become more independent. His favorite thing is helping survivors to meet their needs. Mr. Sesay says “I had never seen these kinds of events in my life. When I entered the Ebola treatment center there were 34 patients in the ward. After three days, 24 of them had died. When I was released I found out that only 10 people in my village had survived. I wanted to do what I could to keep the disease from spreading even more and was given a job as a caregiver in a children’s care center. Then I was chosen to represent my district in the Survivors’ Association. That’s what I’m doing now, helping survivors to survive.” #MyEbolaStory © UNICEF/UNI200665/Grile
