A big, happy 70th birthday to my friend and mentor, @lloydkaufman, the co-founder of Troma Entertainment, and the creator of The Toxic Avenger and many other low budget, cult films. While I was still in graduate school - almost exactly 20 years ago - Lloyd hired me, for 150 bucks, to write the screenplay for my first movie, Tromeo & Juliet. I was thereafter hired to work for him full time at Troma. It was extremely hard work - perhaps one out of five Troma employees stuck around for longer than two weeks at that time - and I didn't get paid much, but I did learn everything about making a movie from casting to getting locations to choreographing sex scenes to releasing the film into theaters. I also had the opportunity to creat many dozens of hours of footage for Troma for DVD extras and a TV show they had at the time - invaluable hands on experience of how to write, shoot, and edit. I don't know so much if I chose a life in film or if it chose me, but Lloyd Kaufman is the single most important person in my life as far as my entry into filmmaking goes. He also remains an extremely close friend and a part of my extended family of outcasts and weirdos. Thank you, Lloyd, for everything. I love you always.
