From "Citizen" by Claudia Rankine:
because white men can't
police their imagination
black men are dying
Tamir Rice was 12 years old. His killers will face no punishment, and are still employed to "protect" citizens by the Cleveland Police Department. A statement from Tamir Rice's mother, Samaria Rice, reads:
"Prosecutor [Tim] McGinty deliberately sabotaged the case, never advocating for my son, and acting instead like the police officers' defense attorney. In a time in which a non-indictment for two police officers who have killed an unarmed black child is business as usual, we mourn for Tamir, and for all the black people who have been killed by the police without justice. In our view, this process demonstrates that race is still an extremely troubling and serious problem in our country and the criminal justice system."
The state has failed this child and his family, and the brutalization of black bodies permeates our culture in countless other fatally insidious ways. Rembert Browne: "Just think about how many times, in jest, you've heard someone mention being intimidated of someone on the grounds of them being big & black. That's the unchecked culture that allows a 12 year-old to be killed on the grounds of who knows."
