“I let my subconscious do the work,” says Manzel Bowman (@artxman), a Long Island-based artist who creates Space Age, Egyptian-inspired illustrations of his favorite musicians, including this one here of singer Tinashe. He started in art like most kids, painting stick figures and shapes in kindergarten. When he was older, he enrolled in a pre-med program, but it “didn’t stick,” so he switched to graphic design, which gave him room to express himself. Manzel hit his first big break with a cartoon version of Big Boi, which the rapper saw on Instagram, and asked to use for a potential mixtape cover. “This is me being three months out of school, just trying to get my artwork out there,” he says. “Since then, I’ve been constantly creating.”
