Californians suffering through the fourth year of a punishing drought have a new worry: flooding. Fierce storms have been predicted for winter, but farmers — those who need water the most — are in poor position to take advantage of any deluge. To prevent millions of gallons of flood water from just flowing to the sea, many farmers are advocating for the construction of dams. A proposal to dam the San Joaquin River, photographed above by @maxwhittaker, has drawn considerable interest. But it would cost more than $2 billion to complete the dam. With such hefty price tags for water projects, doubts are growing about whether pouring high walls of concrete is the best way to solve California’s water problems.
