#Regram #RG @Science: Tangier Island, located in Chesapeake Bay about 105 miles from Washington D.C., is slowly disappearing. Because of climate change, the waters surrounding this island town are rising at an alarming rate, which means that its inhabitants may soon be the United States’ first climate refugees. The US Army Corps of Engineers in Norfolk, Virginia used historic data about the rate of land loss alongside predicted sea-level rises and found that the island could be completely submerged in as little as 50 years. Is there a solution? Newly built sand dunes planted with trees could help buy some time from the encroaching waves, but the solution is temporary.
