A #snowpetrol navigating back to its nest in fierce winds and heavy snow. This photo was taken in the #wolthatmountains mountains of #antarcitca on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック in 2012. These resilient birds are among the very few living animals that live in this harsh place, nesting amongst the cliffs and making the 100+ mile commute every few days to the nearest coastline to feed. Truly impressive, you have to be tough and mean to survive out in these conditions. The temperatures can drop well below -60 and the #katabatic winds can reach speeds of over 100mph, aside from the beauty there is little about this place that is inviting.
