First Do No Harm? Words as empty as the wind are better left unsaid. @MissLuluLaRoo & I & friends are here to remind you that cats' lives matter just as much as dogs' lives do. Dr. Marty Becker wrote a story about declawing & asked his colleagues to stop doing it. 99% of the comments on his story are in support of vets not performing it. Another vet, this one far less famous, who seemed to be afraid of mentioning the word declaw up until now, shared Dr. Becker’s story on his FB page. Sadly most of the comments are from his veterinarian groupies who are either saying they will keep declawing or on how to take the pain away after they amputated the cat’s toes. Here is one of them, “I declaw and will continue to do so, as long as my clients ask for it. I use a surgical laser and have done hundreds without issue,I would rather declaw a cat than see him/her dumped outside or sent to a shelter. When performed properly & on the right patient, I don't see an i$$ue with it. For my cats, they are all declawed &any future cat I take into my house will be done as well. I work too hard to have my furniture ruined & getting scratched up by a cat is no fun.” How many has he done WITH issues? Why isn't the turd helping the 262 declawed cats in shelters within driving distance of his clinic? So to check I called his clinic & asked to get my 1 & 4 yr old cats declawed. They asked if I want 2 or 4 paw. I said 4 paws. “It’s easier to get in between the bones” they said, with his $45,000 laser(They have to do a lot of declaws to pay off that bill) No questions asked & no counseling. I guess the “right patient” is a cat owner with around $500. There are 50 educational videos on this @avmavets vets website, mostly for dog behavioral issues & nothing related to declawing. I asked if I could get my dog’s front paws declawed because it was ruining my wood floor & if I couldn’t, I might take it back to the shelter. They said they won’t declaw a dog because they have more nerves in their paws & it’s a lot more painful, harder to recover& inhumane. Cats actually have MORE nerves in their paws & suffer quieter than dogs do. Think, vets, think. How can this be ok? It can't?
