TIME’s pick for Instagram Photographer of the Year 2015 is Stacy Kranitz (@stacykranitz). Kranitz, a Kentucky native who now lives in California when she’s not traveling, publishes on Instagram intensely personal photographs that blur the boundaries between the personal and the professional as she documents the Appalachian region. The photographer uses Instagram as “it was intended to be used,” as one of her colleagues, Matt Black, put it: “To witness things as they happen.” For her, Instagram is "a sketchpad, notebook or diary," she tells TIME. "It has become a personal archive, a collection of thoughts, moods and feelings,” she says—echoing the millions of people who use Instagram in the same way."
