This is the sad story about Winki the one-eyed kitten who was just declawed?. Winki’s mom works at a vet clinic in the Midwest. She also has another kitty who has only 3 legs and is also declawed, and said that it was in the best interest when they play/fight, that Winki get ALL her toes amputated too. She actually said, “ My main worry were the claws hurting my other beings, she is already down a leg to help her in any battles.” The AAHA & “CAT FRIENDLY” AAFP practice where she works, touts on their website that their $40,000 laser is a “Wonderful surgical technology” for declaws, so we know that they like to do a lot of these amputations to pay back that bill. Winki’s mom told me that they never declaw any cats at their practice that are older than 6 months unless it is “necessary.” My mom called this clinic & no questions asked, they said they would declaw her 8 month old cat on all 4 paws with their laser for $160. They said, “We do these QUITE OFTEN and as long as your pet is healthy there shouldn’t be a problem at all.” NECESSARY?? AAHA is STRONGLY opposed to declawing yet puts zero accountability in their accredited hospitals when it comes to declawing. In all other areas, they have form after form & protocols that they make their practices abide by…but with declawing, NONE. They take a perfectly healthy kitty & do 20 different amputations with their searing laser that burns off the toes and then say the cat will be fine and say, “with a laser they heal faster, pain isn’t as bad, and not as severe on them as the other way.” She says, “Winki is not bothered by her declaw at all, and thank you for your concern, but knowing all of the pros & cons of declawing I decided to do this to make sure her & my other kitty were safe.” Please be brave enough to start this conversation with your vet, veterinary associations, your friends, and your family members.
