Two weeks ago we were in Africa documenting the impact of our work. In developing communities, most people use jerry cans to fetch and haul all of the water they use each day. When you fill just one five-gallon jerry can full of water, it weighs 44lbs! The average distance that people in developing countries walk to find water (from the nearest river, stream, swamp) is 3.75 miles! And the task of collecting water most often falls on women or children. Imagine being an eight-year-old hauling 88lbs of water over a three or four-mile distance! This means that women are often unable to get jobs and children are often unable to go to school or get an education because of the thousands of hours wasted annually just hauling water.
