I don't know why, but these past few days have woken up a part of me that is purely motivated to becoming a better person; to being the change I wish to see. There are so many global issues. So much work to be done in society, in our local and universal community. I think it takes the purity out of your intentions if you tell everyone how charitable you are, but I also feel like it's my responsibility (given my following) to share and inspire others to help make the world a more peaceful, equitable place. Los Angeles is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, but equally one of the most devastating in relation to homelessness and poverty. It ripped my heart apart today, when I was walking home and saw a man sitting on the street, making a fire with a small portable stove, with all his belongings sprawled in front of him. Living in Canada my entire life, I've never been exposed to this kind of extreme. I gave the man a twenty dollar bill (which was the only thing on me at the moment) but it made me feel like I just swallowed my own heart. I'm not sharing this to sound like a "good person" and receive praise. Nor do I wish to see people telling me I can contribute positively in other "more important" ways. I realize there are so, so many global issues, all of which are equally as important to tackle, but it's important that we start realistically with our own communities. We're all inhabitants of the same earth, all living under the same sky, all began as happy children, and we'll all end up in the same place when we're gone, and I believe we have the right to a peaceful and abundant in-between.
