Kyle Carpenter should not be alive today. While serving in Afghanistan in 2010, he saved a fellow Marine by throwing himself on a grenade and sustained major wounds. His heart stopped multiple times, but doctors were able to revive him.
In 2014, President Obama awarded him the Medal of Honor, the United States’ highest military honor. After nearly 40 surgeries and two and a half years in the hospital, he rehabilitated and completed the Marine Corps Marathon last year.
