Forty-five years after Dr. James Naismith invented basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts, the game took its first step toward becoming one of the world's most popular sports. Basketball became an official medal sport at the '36 Olympics. Playing outside on a clay and sand court that left competitors at the mercy of precipitation in the gold medal game, the USA was up 15-4 at halftime and prevailed 19-8 to claim basketball's first Olympic gold medal.
Fact: Spain was a no-show due to the Spanish civil war and thus the USA's 62-game winning streak started with a 2-0 victory by forfeit.
