A trillion years ago, after I was hit by a bus, I had a brief encounter with a less-than-lovely psychologist type. We spent a small handful of sessions working through the anxiety I was feeling crossing the street. I felt, I explained, as if every car, every bus, every truck, every everything was a moment away from running me down. Instead of letting me talk through the terror, she pushed me through meditation after meditation, each intense bout of concentration making my post-concussion symptoms worse and worse and worse. But in the midst of all this repeated trauma, she did say one thing that stuck: She told me to imagine myself as permeable enough to let in the good, but strong enough, too, to shelter myself from the bad. No, that didn't convince me that I could withstand another encounter with a 12 ton hunk of nightmare. But it did give me a new way to envision myself interacting with the world around me: Open and closed. Sensitive and strong. A mighty but gentle force.
