Meet Eudy and Tula, Maremma #sheepdogs on Middle Island in Australia. The two are part of an effort to protect the island’s penguin population from foxes. Dozens of Australian mammal species have gone extinct since European settlers began arriving in the late 18th century, bringing cats, foxes and other predators with them. When the plight of the #penguins became known, a local chicken farmer known as Swampy Marsh suggested that the #Maremma, a particularly territorial breed of dog, could protect the birds. The story of the first pup put to work became the subject of a film, “Oddball.” At 14, the real Oddball is retired. “She comes out when she wants to,” said Swampy Marsh. “She doesn’t do personal appearances.” @davidmauricesmith photographed her successors at work. #??
