Sand #dunes and mountains seen from the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, China, on the edge of the Gobi Desert. The writer @janeperlez traveled to the area from Beijing in search of Buddhist art that was painted and carved in grottoes centuries ago. As the legend goes, a monk arrived in #Dunhuang in A.D. 366 and had a vision of a thousand Buddhas. Overwhelmed, he chiseled a cave for meditation in a vast sandstone cliff — the place now known as the #MogaoCaves. Master artists and their apprentices began painting images of Buddha in murals that stretched across cave walls, and, in some cases, onto ceilings. @adamjdean photographed the caves and #Dunhuang for @nytimestravel.
