What is flakka?
The cheap designer drug known as #Flakka has been a problem throughout the country. “We have instances where people run into traffic naked, screaming and yelling. Those kinds of behaviors. They can become psychotic in and of itself the drug is very dangerous,” said Ann Stevens, public relations coordinator with The Montgomery County Alcohol Drug Abuse and Mental Health Services board.

Flakka is a synthetic drug that causes paranoia, hallucinations and brain damage. In many cases, experts say users typically can be found with their clothes off because of a rise in body temperature. “You don’t know what people are putting into these designer drugs, they can be a combination of many things all of which are not good for you,” said Stevens.

Captain Mike Brem with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office says the Miami Valley crime lab has seen 11 cases so far this year. That number is expected to rise. “People try designer drugs because they are curious. They have heard from their friends how wonderful it is, they think they can feel really good by taking it. Other times, they need it, they’re searching for their next big high,” said Stevens.

In 2014, the Justice Department issued a temporary ban on a chemical that is used in Flakka. However, Stevens says somehow the drug is still being made.

In many cases people who take the drug become violent and/or suicidal. If you suspect someone is on the drug, don’t take matters into your own hands, call authorities. #saynotoflakka
