Morelia spilota spilota is a subspecies of Carpet Python known as the Diamond Python. It is fairly large snake, found in coastal ranges of south Australia and are the most southerly of all python species in the world geographically speaking.
The Diamond Python gets its name quite obviously from the markings along its scales which when full grown resemble a diamond shape. Although these snakes can grow up to a intimidating 6+ feet in length they are not poisonous and pose no real threat to humans if encountered.
Diamond Pythons are ambush predators meaning they lay and wait dormant and motionless in hopes of springing themselves upon unsuspecting prey as they cross the snake's path. This waiting game can take quite a long time for the snake often lasting two or more weeks before a meal is found. After ambush the snakes coil themselves around their prey and suffocate them to death with physical force to make consumption easier.
With a diet consisting of small mammals and reptiles humans are much to large for them to eat though they can deal out a vicious bite when provoked. @ナショナルジオグラフィック @thephotosociety
