Soho’s new sex shop is completely made of felt: #London’s #Soho may be undergoing a gross period of sanitisation and gentrification with rents leaping up, and sex shops and brothels being swept away while Britain’s laws on porn are getting tighter, but somewhere in the narrow streets, a new enterprise has opened – albeit a temporary one. Welcome, Madame Roxy’s Erotic Emporium; a sex shop with a different feel to its predecessors. Forget about PVC and latex, the material of choice in this emporium is felt. Yeah, felt. The matted stuff made of natural or synthetic fibres crushed together and stuck on boards by kids to make pictures of farmyards. So, what is the shop? A fairytale for textile fetishists or an art class joke taken to a fuzzy extreme? Well, the huge project is a protest (and potentially the former depending on personal acquired tastes). With this shop, artist Lucy Sparrow @sewyoursoul set out to test the boundaries of Britain’s new porn laws. If those exhibits were not made of felt, some would be illegal. Formerly a worker in the adult industry, Sparrow launched her art career through lap dancing and her experience has shaped her concerns about what putting restrictions on sex and adult entertainment can do. She believes censoring sexual freedoms will promote a Victorian attitude towards natural instincts and bodily function. As you might guess, this wasn’t a quick job. It’s taken her six months to stitch more than 5000 sex products together – from porn mags to BSDM paddles. If you’d like to visit the fuzziest sex shop in the UK you’ve got until the end of Saturday 17th. Unless you’re under 18 then obviously, you’re too young, idiot. This is a sex shop. – words @hannahrose___ #dazedinstastory ? @sewyoursoul
