#Repost @darrenmcmullen ・・・ Another sad day in the American gun violence saga. Over 10,000 Americans killed every year by this hideous weapon. In 1996 my old school in Scotland, Dunblane Primary, had a horrendous man, he doesn't deserve to be named, stroll into a gym class of 4 year olds, killing 16 & their teacher. Almost Immediately the government of the U.K. changed the gun laws and made it a lot more difficult for people to get a hold of them. Semi Automatic and pump action fire arms were banned. There was a mandatory registration for shot gun owners. Yes, people can still have a license for a fire arm and they can still hunt but they don't fall into the wrong hands. There was a massive buy back of the guns and as a result there has only been 1 mass shooting in the last 29 years. Shortly after that in a place called Port Arthur in Australia another disturbed individual walked into a high traffic tourist area and opened fire, killing 35 people. Again, the Australian government (conservative & right wing) was quick to act and enforced strict gun laws. There was a massive buy back of the guns that flooded the streets. Certain types of guns were totally banned. Each gun you do own now requires a separate permit with a 28-day waiting period. Guns can only be sold by licensed firearms dealers, and limits are placed on the amount of ammunition that can be sold. Firearm owners have to be 18, complete a safety course, and have a "genuine reason" for owning a gun, such as sport shooting, hunting, or occupational requirements. Again there has only been one heinous mass killing since. A hostage situation in Sydney where 4 people were killed, including the terrorist. In the 18 years previous to Port Arthur 112 people were killed in 13 mass shootings. Gun laws unfortunately have to be set to control the worst people in society & that means that the best sometimes have to give up something, for the greater good. Republican, Democrats, Independents let's unite on this and stop the people of America getting massacred, in what has become almost monthly occurrences. Yes you have the "right to bare arms" but victims of gun violence have a greater "right to live"
