A UK student is commuting from Poland because it’s cheaper: In news that probably won't shock a lot of you, a #London #university #student is saving himself money by commuting in from #Poland. Yeah. Poland. As in the country. You know, the one that's over 1000 MILES AWAY. Jonathan Davey, who is currently studying at the University of London @_londonu, moved to #Gdansk after tallying up the cost between renting in London and living in Poland and flying in for lectures. Turns out, the latter is actually cheaper – by thousands of pounds. Compared to rooms in his university halls – which can cost up to £220 a week – Davey is now spending £2100 a year on pre-booked return flights, airport buses and rent in the Polish city. “It's hard to believe it's cheaper to commute 1000 miles than live just round the corner," the 23-year-old anthropology student told The Mirror. “But the cost of living for students is crippling. I'm thousands of pounds a year better off living in Poland.” “I leave home in Gdansk and fly to Luton at 6am on Wednesdays. Because of the hour time difference, I'm sat in my first lecture by 10am. I have lectures Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and then fly back to Poland until I do it all again the next Wednesday. It works brilliantly.” Davey spends two nights a week in London – either at cheap hostels, on his friend's sofas or back at his parents in Hampshire – and when he's back in Gdansk he stays in a hostel that costs only £35 for the week. “My parents think I’m mad, but they've always known I'm a free spirit,” he added. “I've shown them the figures and they can see I'm saving a fortune. Flying backwards and forwards every week makes life feel a bit like a permanent holiday.” This completely insane news only highlights how much of an absolute joke London living really is. With rents raising by 25% in just three years, the spiralling costs are causing many young students and creatives to struggle – with the National Union of Students warning that the system has reached a real crisis point. No shit. – words @dominiquesisley #dazedinstastory
