Earlier today, 1st Lt. Alexander “Sandy” Bonnyman Jr. was finally laid to rest in his hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee, 72 years after dying in World War II while fighting on Tarawa.
Bonnyman was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for leading repeated assaults on an enemy emplacement. After many attempts, Bonnyman and his men were able to flush the enemy out by placing demolition charges at each entrance and seizing the top of the objective. Bonnyman defended his position with ferocious determination even as additional enemy forces attacked and was mortally wounded, but not before killing three enemy soldiers.
