Women’s football was outlawed in England in 1921, so the following year Dick, Kerr's Ladies, one of the earliest known women's association football teams in England, embarked on a North American tour. #OnThisDay in 1922 they lost their curtain-raiser 6-3 against Paterson FC, which proved one of only two defeats they suffered in eight matches – an incredible feat considering the English women were competing against the top American men’s teams! The team remained in existence for over 48 years from 1917 to 1965 playing 828 games, winning 758, drawing 46, and losing 24. During its early years, matches attracted anywhere from 4,000 to over 50,000 spectators per match.
