This is an office building, turned inside out. Architect Alejandro Aravena created this model to show how we could improve the sustainability of big buildings. The typical office tower -- with windows on the outside -- creates a huge greenhouse effect inside. Instead, this model has an open glass atrium inside with thick walls outside. That makes it easier to control light, improves cross-ventilation, and makes the building more energy efficient. Aravena says, “we went from 120 kilowatts per square meter per year, which is the typical energy consumption for cooling a glass tower, to 40 kilowatts per square meter per year.” Learn more at go.ted.com/officewalls
