Water in many parts is directly sourced from meltwater from nearby glaciers, as rain is almost non-existent. In the Spiti Valley (image), annual rainfall can be as little as 170mm annually. Studies have shown that the glaciers in the Himalayan region are fast retreating as #globalwarming intensifies and without this precious and vital water source, growing what little people can in these regions would be near impossible. Not only is the environmental issue concerning, but also has implications on people’s livelihoods and development goals as their income sources would be severely constrained. Here a woman tends to her barley crop at 4700m above sea level on a clear summer’s day…
