This is the day when they skin the bears that have been shot by the hunters during the last week.

A decade ago, we witnessed first hand the insanity of a bear trophy hunt, as we worked on a story about brown bears in Kamchatka, Russia, for National Geographic Magazine. Yet the trophy hunting continues unabated in Russia, as well as British Columbia and Alaska. There is no glory in killing a bear, of any colour or size, from a high powered rifle from a distance where the powerful animal has no hope of challenging the "fearless and mighty" trophy hoarder.
We support the efforts of BC First Nations trying to ban bear trophy hunts on their ancestral lands.
It is time for our species to learn to value other living beings as they are — be they bears, lions, or planet Earth — and not for how they look on our walls or selfies.
