How can I fully express what it means to have been a student under Professor Elliott Bayev all these many years? We met in high school and became fast friends, & began training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu shortly thereafter. I actually introduced him to the art, but Professor Elliott quickly surpassed me & became a world class competitor, winning in almost all of the sport's biggest tournaments. It wasn't long before I was taking classes from him. Back then our training ground consisted of wherever we could find mat space, but in the years since I have witnessed Professor Elliott's school blossom into one of the finest Martial Arts academies in the world. Whenever I step into OpenMat, I take a look around. I marvel at the grandeur of its skylights and city views, its huge mat space & elegant work out stations. I marvel at Professor Elliott's encyclopedic knowledge of the art, rippling its way through the highest level competitor in the room, to the school's youngest student. I take a look around. And in a word, I feel like I am home. So many times over the years I have been confronted with self doubt, or difficulties in my personal life, and Professor Elliott has been there to guide me back to the way of Jiu Jitsu, and how the grace, humility and strength of this beautiful art can be applied to one's own personal challenges. I truly don't know where I would be without Professor Elliott's guidance. What he has taught me is life saving: in a literal sense, I have gained mastery of self defense techniques that are proven effective in survival situations. And more philosophically, Professor Elliott has taught me to constantly strive be kinder & more compassionate, to dream big and work harder, to experience the joy of living in a healthy body, to have a more inquisitive mind. Nowhere are these virtues more evident than in his students; the kindest, most inclusive, hardest working & most talented group of people I've ever known. It is an honor to be even a small part of this special group. One day, when I have children, I hope they can train here too, so they too can improve their own lives and the world, one technique at a time. Thank you Professor Elliott. #OSS
