The little pillars are called galls, they are usually caused by insects feeding or egg laying. The spot where they feed or lay eggs is triggered to produce excess growth hormones and it makes the leaf grow outward into a strange point. Sometimes the insect eggs will develop and hatch inside the gall. Fun fact, the most common ink for writing up until the 19th century was made from galls that formed on oak trees. (Iron gall).
