"Football season is upon us again and memories of my personal #NFL moments are rushing to the forefront. In 1974, we went to Al Davis of the #OaklandRaiders and told him we wanted to do a book about the Raiders. Believe it or not, he signed on and for an entire season the writer, Stephen Cassady and I were official members of the evil Silver and Black 'family.' Those were the 'innocent' days in the NFL, before the business of the game became bigger than the game itself - kind of like the early days of rock and roll when musicians were playing for the love of it and money was a byproduct of their passion. John Madden was the coach, Ken Stabler was the quarterback, and the team itself consisted of a colorful group of players from Fred Biletnikoff to Jack Tatum and many more football greats. We traveled by plane with the team and I was allowed in the locker room at the home games; this photographic freedom was generously granted years before the lipstick cameras and ESPN started recording every move of every team. Here the players are warming their hands at a freezing Mile High Stadium in Denver. Oh, yes, the book was called 'Oakland Raiders: The Good Guys!'"
