"Anna Neagle Born 1904-86

Actress. Born Marjorie Robertson in Essex, she first appeared on stage in 1917, and took her mother's name in 1930. Her first film, 'Goodnight Vienna' (1932), was directed by her future husband Herbert Wilcox, with whom she was to make thirty- two films. In 1939 Neagle went to Hollywood and made 'Nurse Edith Cavell' (1939), and three musicals including 'No, No, Nanette' (1940) on which she was working when this portrait was painted. She was the first actress to appear on the cover of Life magazine.
