Today is the last of eight days on the road from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to the Great Sand Dunes and Breckenridge in Colorado, to Arches National Park and Zion in Utah, to Las Vegas, Nevada, to Lake Tahoe, and finally Mendocino in California. @damanibaker grew up on this coast and shared with me all the traditions of this half of america -- driving, hiking to 11,000 feet, huevos rancheros, souls of mischief, the golden state poppy, a fine white wine, and fresh produce. Everyone we met hiking and especially the @nationalparkservice rangers were exceptionally nice. What a spectacular culture exists in these parks of people who are humble and in awe of nature. Winding through the American west reading about indigenous peoples (in an Indigenous People's History of America by Roxanne Dunbar Oritz and Book of Hopi edited by Frank Waters) and about climate change (in Eaarth by Bill Mckibbin) was as hopeful an experience as it was devastating. Hearing that there is the knowledge and the leadership and the example of a better way for us to live while simultaneously witnessing the apparent and often violent destruction of these traditions was a journey we wished more of humankind could go on. Not as part of a camp or program, but in the quiet slow individual pace of human experience, with nothing and nobody to report back to, just the ability to sit on a peak and to see the fog lift and to make eye contact with a marmut sunning herself a peak away, and wonder at the fine balance of planet earth. #earthwindandtire
