There were no surprises on Day One of the #FIBAAsiaWomen2015 as the favored teams all came out victorious. In Level I (Group A) play, Chinese Taipei, Japan, and China all won their respective assignments. Chinese Taipei opened their account with a 92-61 blowout of India. In a rematch of championship protagonists from 2013 and a battle of contrasting styles, Japan slipped past rival Korea, 59-53. Japan went almost exclusively to their frontcourt players in the paint, while Korea relied more on their outside shooting prowess. In the nightcap, it was almost too easy for hosts China as they ran roughshod over Southeast Asian foe Thailand, 113-34. As expected, the Chinese led from wire to wire against the Thais, who entered the game as heavy underdogs. China erected a 19-point lead at the end of the first period and continuously built on that as the game progressed, culminating in the 81-point final margin. Earlier in the day, Malaysia kept fellow Southeast Asian nation Philippines at bay, 71-64, to open their account in Level II (Group B) on a high note. Eugene Ting impressed for the victors with 17 points, while Allana Lim led the Philippines with 17 points and 8 rebounds. After that game, DPR Korea imposed its will on hapless Sri Lanka, 82-35. Jang Mi-Gyong recorded 13 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 steals in a well-rounded effort for the victors, while Anjalee Ekanayake tossed in 14 points for the losing side. In the tournament’s opening match, Kazakhstan outclassed Hong Kong, 99-48, thanks to the superb effort of Anna Vinokurova. The 191cm center had an 18-point, 17-rebound double-double in the win, while Lam Pik Yi was the lone Hong Kong player to score in double-figures with 11 points. Day Two will feature some exciting match-ups, with the Korea-China game the one not to be missed. Japan take on India while Chinese Taipei face Thailand in other Level I (Group A) games even as Hong Kong and Sri Lanka open hostilities in Level II (Group B). Malaysia try to go for a second win against Kazakhstan, while the Philippines hope to bounce back in their game opposite DPR Korea.
