In 1988, my friend Pablo let me borrow a tape to dub. Back then, most of my friends couldn't afford the boom box with two cassette players, so we put two players face-to-face to record stuff (they had microphones on the front). But my dad had just gotten our family a hi-fi stereo with two cassette decks. This may have been the first tape I made with it. As I listened to the album, I made my own cover with gold and silver paint markers, a tradition I would repeat with every album I copied for years to come. Straight Outta Compton never went out of rotation. This was my prized possession, and one of the most important, defining albums of my young life. Growing up in Woodland Hills, where Ice Cube had gone to school, we all had our own versions of the true stories told by NWA; we reveled in their exaggerated tales; and we understood the difference between the two. Long live NWA.
