In Plains, #Georgia, just beyond the welcome signs with the presidential seal, people still call him “Mr. Jimmy.” So on Thursday, as this small city less than three hours south of Atlanta absorbed the announcement that former President #JimmyCarter had received a diagnosis of cancer that had spread, the news was not just that a former president was ill. It was that Mr. Jimmy — the 90-year-old Sunday school teacher who sometimes stops at Mimmie’s Diner, pictured here — was sick. Now, a longstanding question has surfaced anew: What will come of Plains after the former president is no longer part of the community? @kevindliles visited Plains on #nytassignment.
