I was obsessed with Barbie when I was growing up but was somewhat reluctant to buy one for Mazzy because I thought Barbie represented one version of the ideal girl— white, blonde and blue-eyed. Then Mattel sent me a few Barbies from their Fashionista line. Yes, they all wear different clothes and have their own styles, but they also have different hair colors, skin tones, eye colors and a range of shapes for their eyes, lips and noses.
