I was writing on a napkin at a bar I show up to time and again. And a man asked me what I was writing. And I felt the joke , like an egg on my face, he asked trying to make me clean. I'm not writing. I'm praying. And l let him see my eyes. Wet with want and hope. My body so small, it hasnt moved for an hour. Except to smooth the pen across the paper. I tell him I'm not lost in thought. I'm heavy with the burden of being awake. The never healing all feeling wound of an open heart. And he apologizes and says well it looks like you've been crying , you should wipe your face before you go. And I set down my pen and stand to say. Well it looks like you've been dying. And there's no where else for us to go.
