A few people wont know who this is but for this moment, it's not about who, it's more of a what, why and how.
Today, the 5-14yr olds competed at the BMX World Champs here in Belgium. For this young lady, it was one of those days where her starts just weren't going quite right. The harder she tried, the worse they got!
In the quarter final, she worked her way back from a bad start to finish 4th and qualify through to the semi. In the semi final and after another bad start, she worked her way back into a qualifying position (4th) half way down the last straight! Her day wasn't over yet..! At this point, confidence and self belief can be hard to find! Self doubt kicks in and that's when you can either think it's all over, or, you can forget about where you want to finish and focus on how you can perform. What are the things that make you perform your best?
For the final, all I wanted from her was a process... Roll onto the gate, set her pedals, roll her wrists forward, watch for the lights and give it everything. The result over the finish line didn't matter as long as she did the process!
The funny thing about her focusing on the process was that it allowed her to get her best start of the day (and when it mattered most)! Meet Jessie Smith - World Number 1 for the 14 yr girls!
