There was a real buzz on the opening day of the 2015 #FIBAU19 Women's World Championship after host nation Russia dazzled a packed crowd in Chekhov. Almost 3,000 fans were treated to a spectacular opening ceremony inside the Sport Palace Olimpiiskiy and they lapped up the entertainment that followed, as Russia confirmed their status as a title frontrunner. They blasted their way to an 89-43 success against Chinese Taipei as they harvested a scintillating 15 blocks, with Maria Vadeeva continuing where she left off at EuroBasket Women 2015 with 16 points, six boards and five swats. In the same venue, there was also a big statement made by Australia, who swamped Serbia 105-62 in Group D as Alanna Smith stole the show with 18 points. Serbia will get to try and bounce back against Korea, who also suffered opening day blues with a disappointing 82-51 defeat to Brazil, who were fuelled by 19 points by Gabriela Guimaraes. Defending champions USA collect a 72-57 triumph in Group B against Spain who were unable to cope with some swarming USA defence in the second half. Napheesa Collier secured a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds, while Wilson replicated the feat with 18 points and 10 boards. Both teams will now match-up against China and Egypt in their next games, with China having eased to a 73-60 win against Egypt behind the hot hand of Jinbo Xing who fired 21 points. Early in the day in Chekhov, there was a major slice of history merrily gobbled up by Belgium who won their first ever game at the tournament. The debutantes crept past neighbours France 64-60 in Group C, thanks mainly to a super 17 points from the 16-year-old Elise Ramette and a nice cameo from Serena-Lynn Geldof. Mali almost caused an upset in the other game in Group C as they made Canada work hard for a 71-62 success. There was a similar game in Vidnoe when Netherlands allowed an 18-point lead to evaporate, but hit back to claim a 79-65 win against Argentina. Laura Westerik had a debut to remember with 21 points. Meanwhile Victoria Llorente responded with 22 points and 12 rebounds in defeat.
