We were fortunate enough to assist the #ChipembereFoundation in the tagging of a #Rhino a few days ago. The complete and utter devastation these animals have endured so that humans can grind down their horns (which amount to little more than keratin in fingernails) for 'medicine' is appalling, with China and Vietnam being the main markets. The system of #Poachers, dealers and ultimately users is a complex web of #CatAndMouse in the ongoing attempt to educate people about the animal's plight and halt its seemingly inevitable eradication from the earth. A number of rhino populations have become extinct already. The #SumatranRhino and #JavaneseRhino are very close to extinction due mostly to destruction of habitat, both probably numbering less than 100 individual animals left. The #NorthernWhiteRhino is literally down to a couple of females and a single living male and probably beyond help at this point. The #SouthernWhiteRhino can be saved but it's only due to the lifelong dedication of a wonderful, tight-knit community of people focusing their entire lives to helping the cause.
