Growing up in the south side of Chicago—the biggest black ghetto in America during the Great Depression—all I ever saw were dead bodies, stogies, and the policy racket. As a result, as a child, all I wanted to be was a gangster. I’ll never forget years later in Seattle, I broke into an armory, still pursuing my dreams of being a gangster, and stumbled upon a piano. As soon as I touched the keys, every cell in my body knew right there and then that music was what I was meant to do for the rest of my life!! In contrast to being in prison or being dead.
