Mounds of salt in #Bolivia, ready for evaporation and transport. An estimated 50 percent of the world's supply of lithium lies beneath the Salar de Uyuni in southern Bolivia. The increasing global demand for the element has prompted claims by Bolivians that the landlocked country will become the ‘‘Saudi Arabia of #lithium.’’ The use of lithium as a therapy for mental illness goes back to at least Greek and Roman times. But despite its widespread use as a mood stabilizer, only 5 percent of all lithium production is devoted to medication. Economists have been forecasting a lithium economy for decades. It may well be that, someday, every car, computer and wearable electronic device — not to mention our energy storehouses — will depend on lithium batteries. #NYTMag photo by Olaf Otto Becker.
