As a newbie in the film scoring game I do my homework like a mofo. First I watched films for enjoyment. Then I obsessed over films during our 15 hour tourbus treks. Then I really got into it once I was looking for cool sampling sources, Then I inhaled films cause I got tired of all these women using sentences like ".....but Ahmir NOONE is a cinema obsessive like Bun B, he's a walking Criterion information source, after you studied all 3 Brazil dvd commentary THEN I might holla" (true story, Bun knows films like NOONE)----welp then I started to work doing scoring here and there and I had to learn fast: how to not be mellow dramatic, learn who clears stuff cheap and fast and learn who is litigious, learn which key patches work well as to not distract dialogue...it's a learning curve and a crash course you really can't learn in college (I mean there are courses, but it's trial and error mostly) I will say that I "studied the gods" to the T: Williams, Copland, Shore, Vangelis, Mancini, Elfman, Zimmer, Goldsmith---even ol Reznor bout to be in a good position in the Hollywood Caste Chart. Well, we lost a great one tonight with the passing of #JamesHorner. I mean one can debate the power of film is in the hands of its director or its actor or its editor or cinematographer. But as a James Cameron freak I have to say that his epic scores gave his films that extra "!!!!!!!" From the epic "KING OF THE WORLD!" moments of Titanic to the quiet eeriness of that string quartet knowing this was going to be their final song on earth. I mean there a bajillion iconic moments in all the films he scored: Spriderman, Perfect Storm, Avatar, ---even the playfulness of Honey I Shrunk The Kids (so many credited and uncredited projects) just wanna pay my respects to one of the greats. And send good energy to his family. I'm a longtime admirer of his work and his legacy will not be forgotten. #Rip.
