PLEASE take the time to read this. I was struggling w/ how to put this in my own words. @essenaoneill spelled it out PERFECTLY!
"I want to respect and embrace all cultures. However, when it comes to deliberately harming other sentient beings for personal gain (food, entertainment, "photos") That is not something we should ever ignore. It is up to those who have a voice to stand up for those who aren't able to say no. If you aren't already aware, China is preparing for its annual dog meat festival or better know as the "festival of cruelty" where up to a million dogs are slaughtered for their meat. If you disagree with this cruelty, please sign the petition.
Social media is very powerful. I've seen this all over my feed. However, this global story begs a very serious question... How can we feel so strongly against the cruelty of dogs yet completely disregard and justify our own "cultures" treatment to other animals. Yes killing a dog is unnecessary and horrible. But not to the people who enjoy eating it. It is their culture, they most likely see it as healthy/tasty etc. Just like to me, killing a cow, pig or chicken is unnecessary and horrible. I know a plant based diet has every nutrient we need, and the onslaught of environmental effects of animal agriculture is undebatable. According to the UN, over a billion sentient beings are bred, tortured and killed each year for food, clothing and entertainment. While up to a million dogs will be killed at this festival, that is next to nothing to compared to the other sentient beings killed every second. Let's get real with it, culture, tradition, taste and convenience should never justify CRUELTY.
I once felt so strongly for whales/pet cruelty yet didn't even think of how my own "food" came to my plate. I didn't question eating animals because it was my culture..It tasted good and everyone did it. Then one day I watched Earthlings.. I couldn't believe the lies I had been fed, and the reality of what I was paying for.
