Thanks to Instagram, I discovered that my friend Philip Treacy - Master Milliner - was also at the hotel. Philip, a life long Monroe fan, was keen to visit Marilyn’s grave. I accompanied him. But he had a more audacious plan: He wanted to see the house in Brentwood where she lived briefly, and died tragically, in 1962. It was for sale and this was the last viewing day. There was a problem: In order to see the house you had to show you had $10M in the bank. I couldn’t help. Philip found a solution as only he could: A friend of his put up the money to get us through the door; We would pretend to be her decorators, an advance party who would report back. It was twilight, almost. The house, Hacienda style, was modest by Hollywood standards -a stark contrast for example to Jayne Mansfield's exuberant pink palace that once stood a few miles away. The bones of it were unchanged, the kidney shaped pool Monroe was said to be proud of, still there. We were not allowed to take photographs.
